How to Render Care in Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. The onset of this disorder is primarily caused by neurofibrillary tangles. It is a senile degenerative illness which means it is a progressive cognitive decline and memory loss that occurs in ages 65 and above. However, there are cases that this diseases onsets in early age. It is characterized by slow but progressive memory loss and will lead to declining of function of daily living and eventually to death.

Alzheimer’s disease is one of many illnesses that gobble the health of our elderly. Patients who are dwelled in this disorder need great attention and proper care. Professional health caregivers that renders a home based care must responsible be enough to shoulder the responsibility in caring these patients. Caregivers need to provide a stress free milieu because these patients can easily get anxious, hostile, irritate and depressed. Patient with Alzheimer has an unclear pattern of thinking and poor reasoning, thus it is important for the caregivers to introduce an activity one at a time. It is also important to routinely to orient the patient in its surroundings, things and people that surrounds because patients with this disorder misidentify people and things.

Attaining the patient’s necessities is very important. Self- care deficit is one problem that caregivers need to focus. It is very important to provide the patient with proper hygiene and grooming. Caregivers should not only provide them proper nutrition as well they should secure that the patient is fed well. Patients with this disorder have poor abstract thinking. They are not able to perform activities that requires judgment, thus it is important to secure the patient’s safety.

Caregivers does not only must not only focus in patients alone, it is also important to help the patient’s family to cope in such situation, provide emotional support and educate them about the patient’s disease, needs, treatment, and medication.

A good quality care plan could help the caregivers in caring these patients. Caregivers should formulate a concrete care plan integrated with plans for patients, daily routine, activities, rest, medication, and therapies. With it, it would alleviate the task that a caregiver needs to attend at this time all goals and progressive outcomes would be met.
